I do not know the reason sources i found have maple mostly.

One source wrote that red maple is bad for horses not really specifying why.
Don t use branches that have been treated or sprayed with chemicals or pesticides.
Some woods have toxic properties.
Never use wood with any pesticide residue even if bark was removed.
